Institutional memory is an organization's retained record of its own past: what it decided, why it decided it, what happened as a result, and which commitments and constraints still bind it today. It is the organizational equivalent of long-term memory, and in most organizations it is carried informally by long-tenured people rather than held by any system.
Porque importa
Organizations without institutional memory relitigate settled questions, repeat failures they have already paid for, and lose the reasoning that made a policy sensible in the first place. The symptom is familiar: a rule everyone follows and nobody can explain. Institutional memory is what makes an organization capable of learning rather than merely of operating, and it degrades quietly, one departure and one tool migration at a time.

Used across management, public administration and organizational studies, often interchangeably with corporate memory. Organizational Memory is the narrower, engineered form of the same idea: institutional memory held deliberately as infrastructure rather than accumulated by accident.
