Definição
Corporate memory is the business term for the knowledge, decisions and context a company retains over time, independently of the individuals who produced them. It is used interchangeably with institutional memory. Corporate memory loss describes the resulting failure state: a company that can no longer reconstruct why it does what it does, typically after turnover, reorganization or a migration between systems.
Porque importa
Corporate memory loss is expensive precisely because it is invisible on any balance sheet. Nothing is written off when the person who understood a client relationship leaves, or when a decommissioned system takes a decade of context with it. The cost appears later, as slower decisions, repeated mistakes, longer onboarding and commitments the company cannot account for. Memory that is owned as infrastructure survives all three of the events that usually destroy it: people leaving, tools changing and reorganizations.
De onde vem
A term from management practice rather than from a single author. Timer uses Organizational Memory in preference to it, because corporate memory describes a condition an organization happens to be in, while Organizational Memory names a layer an organization can deliberately build and own.
