Most memory systems are built forwards.

They start empty, capture from the day you switch them on, and become useful once enough has piled up. That is a real pattern and a fair worry. It is not how Timer works.

02 How Timer works

Timer works backwards.

Connect the tools your team already uses and Timer reads the history already in them. The first thing it holds is not what you did today. It is what you did before you had Timer. That is why the first useful answer arrives on the first day instead of the first quarter.

Timer reads the same documents and keeps going: why this one exists, what was decided in it, who approved that, what it commits you to, and how much weight it still carries. A contract is not a file. It is a set of obligations with an owner, a rationale, and a date that matters.

We touch the same documents. We work a level beneath them, where the reasoning lives, so a person or an AI can act on what the document meant rather than just quote what it said.

05 Old context is not current context

An old thread does not outrank a signed contract.

Reading years of history means reading things that were true once, things that were only ever proposed, and things somebody argued for and lost. A memory layer that treats all of it as equally true is worse than having none.

When it was true Every fact carries the period it was true in the world, not only the date we read it. A rule that was replaced reads as ended, not as current.
Where it came from Facts are ranked by the authority of their source. A signed document outranks a transaction, which outranks something someone said in a thread. Chat is the weakest evidence in the system, not the loudest.
When two disagree Colliding facts are arbitrated, never averaged. One is served as current, the others are marked superseded, and the answer still tells you the point was contested.
What it was built from Every change to every fact is recorded, so the memory can be read as it stood on any past date and any answer can be traced back to what produced it.

Weight goes to decisions, commitments, money and corrections over chatter. How that ranking works is ours and stays ours. What you get to check is the outcome, which is the right test anyway: during a trial, ask it something where the answer changed. It should tell you what is true now, when it changed, and what it replaced.

06 Reading history is the quiet lane

Backfill runs behind live data, never in front of it.

Reading years of history across enterprise systems is a real load, and a connector that pulls as fast as an API allows is one that gets throttled and takes your team's own access down with it. Timer's backfill is deliberately unhurried.

Today first Current activity is fetched ahead of history, and the archive drains behind it with whatever budget is left. A large backlog never puts a queue in front of what happened this morning.
Paced, not maximal Each run works to a time budget and a per-account pace rather than to whatever ceiling the provider will tolerate.
Set per connection How far back to reach, how much to move per run and how often to run are settings on the connection, not one aggressive default applied to every provider.
Backs off, and says so A connection that starts failing retries on a widening interval up to a cap, and when Timer gives up it tells you the connection needs reconnecting rather than quietly pausing your data.

On permissions, Timer reads through the account that authorised it and sees what that account can already see, so connecting Timer widens nobody's access. Read paths are read-only, every connection is listed on its own, and any one of them can be revoked without disturbing the rest.
